A Photographer’s Guide –

Let’s be honest, Wales isn’t exactly known for sunshine. If you’re planning a wedding here, the thought of rain has probably crossed your mind at least once. Or twice. Or every time you’ve checked the forecast for the past six months.

The good news? Rain on your wedding day is nowhere near as catastrophic as it feels in the planning stages. Here’s what you actually need to know.

Will rainy photos look awful?

Genuinely, no. Some of the most beautiful wedding photos are taken in overcast or rainy conditions. Harsh sunshine creates squinting, unflattering shadows, and blown-out skies. Soft, cloudy light is actually a photographer’s best friend. It’s even, flattering, and gives images a gorgeous, timeless quality. A little rain can add real drama and atmosphere too.

What about outdoor shots?

If you had your heart set on a specific outdoor location, your photographer will adapt. A good wedding photographer always scouts for covered spots, interesting doorways, dramatic skies, or sheltered areas that work beautifully in wet weather. You might end up with photos you love even more than the ones you originally planned for.

Should I hire umbrellas?

Yes, and do it early! Clear or white umbrellas photograph really well and won’t cast odd colours on your skin. A couple of matching umbrellas for you and your partner can actually become a lovely prop. Some venues will have them on hand, so it’s worth asking.

What if I’m worried about my dress?

Talk to your photographer ahead of the day about your concerns. They’ll work with you to protect the dress while still getting great shots. A light drizzle during a quick outdoor portrait session isn’t going to ruin anything, and most photographers are well practised at working quickly when the weather turns.

Is there anything I can do to prepare?

Have a rough wet-weather plan in place with your venue and photographer before the day. Know which indoor spaces are available for portraits, and try to let go of the idea that rain equals disaster, because it really doesn’t. Some of the most joyful, memorable wedding images come from couples who leaned into the weather rather than fighting it.

Rain is part of life in Wales. It’s part of your story. And in the right hands, it makes for incredible photographs.
