I watched a YouTube video from a “professional” wedding photographer recently that was supposed to teach beginners about auto modes. It hit all the usual beats – aperture priority, shutter priority, Auto ISO – and then completely skipped the one feature that actually makes auto modes usable in real shooting conditions: AE-L (Auto Exposure Lock).
This happens constantly. Auto modes get treated like training wheels for people who “don’t know what they’re doing yet,” and the explanations stop at the basics. Nobody mentions metering, and almost nobody mentions AE-L. So here’s what you should know by someone who actually uses it.

The problem: your camera doesn’t know what grey looks like
Every metering mode in your camera – spot, centre-weighted, evaluative/matrix, whatever – is built around the same assumption: it wants to render whatever it’s pointed at as middle grey (18% grey, roughly). It gets the exposure right most of the time, and that’s good enough for manufacturers.
It works fine when your scene is a reasonably balanced mix of tones. But it falls apart the moment it isn’t:
- Point your camera at a bright white wedding dress, and the camera will underexpose it to drag it down to grey.
- Point it at a black tuxedo, and the camera will overexpose it to drag it up to grey.
- Walk from a bright window into a dim room mid-shoot, and if you’re in an auto mode, your exposure will swing around trying to keep re-metering the new scene.
None of this is a flaw exactly – it’s just what metering is. But if a tutorial explains auto modes without explaining this, it’s leaving out the part that actually matters.
The fix: AE-L, not on-the-fly exposure compensation
The common workaround people are taught is exposure compensation (EV) – dialling up or down when the meter gets it wrong. Technically correct, but not practical when you’re shooting anything that moves, like a wedding, an event, or literally any real-world situation where light is changing around you and you have to respond quickly.
This is where AE-L comes in, and it’s genuinely surprising how few people know about it given that most cameras have a dedicated button for it. It’s literally printed on the button!
Here’s the idea:
- Point your camera at a neutral, mid-toned part of the scene – not the brightest thing, not the darkest thing.
- Press and lock AE-L. This locks in a correct exposure (or one that is close to 18% grey)
- Recompose and shoot whatever you actually want to shoot, as long as it’s in the same light.
- The moment the light changes – eg: you move rooms, someone steps into shadow, you turn toward a window – re-meter and lock again.
What you end up with is something like manual mode, except the camera is doing the reading for you and setting it instantly, instead of you scrolling dials up and down trying to chase the right exposure while a moment happens in front of you. No hunting for the right number. No blinking histogram while you fumble with a wheel. You meter, lock, shoot.
Tip: In AV, set your minimum shutter speed to 1/250, that way auto mode adjusts your ISO first before it affects your shutter speed (it will only go below 1/250th once the ISO ceiling is hit).
Note: For parts of the wedding day where you are stood still and the light isn’t changing, I suggest switching back to manual and lowering your shutter speed to get a cleaner image (low ISO).
No neutral grey point to meter off? Use your hand!
If there’s nothing obviously mid-toned in the scene to meter from, a common trick is metering off the back of your own hand. Caucasian skin tone is often reasonably close to middle grey in terms of luminance – though depending on your skin tone, you may need to dial in some exposure compensation to split the difference rather than treating it as an exact match. Think back to how your camera meters; if it’s dark, it will try to over-expose, therefore underexposing African skin tone would require 1 to 2 stops underexposure. Experiment with it and find out what works.
Misconception: Auto ISO in manual mode is not manual mode
One more thing that gets muddled constantly: shooting in “manual mode” with Auto ISO turned on is not actually manual exposure. You’re setting aperture and shutter speed yourself, sure, but the camera is still deciding your overall exposure by adjusting ISO on the fly. That’s auto exposure with extra steps – there’s nothing wrong with using it, but call it what it is…
Why this matters
There’s a persistent idea that auto modes are for beginners and “real” photographers shoot manual. Absolute nonsense. That framing misses the actual distinction that matters:
- Letting the camera continuously re-decide exposure based on whatever it happens to be pointed at, shot to shot – that’s genuinely unreliable, because it has no idea what a scene is supposed to look like. All your camera is trying to do is make everything middle-grey.
- Locking exposure to a value you’ve deliberately chosen, based on knowing that white should render as white and black should render as black – that’s not a lesser way of shooting. It’s just manual exposure with the camera doing the arithmetic for you.
AE-L is the bridge between those two things. It’s fast, it’s practical for anything with movement or changing light, and it solves a major problem that trips people up when they’re first told “just use auto mode, it’s fine.” Exposure compensation (EV+/-) is not the answer.
Why exposure compensation alone isn’t the answer
Most people are taught that when the camera gets exposure wrong, exposure compensation is the fix. It’s presented as the whole solution to auto mode’s blind spot. It isn’t – and this is the half of the lesson that almost never gets taught.
The problem is that exposure compensation is relative to whatever the camera is currently metering, not a fixed value. Stay with me for a sec. Say you point your camera at a bride in a white dress and the meter underexposes it, so you dial in +2EV to compensate. That’s correct – for that dress, in that light, at that moment. But the second you point the camera at something else – the groom’s dark suit, a shaded corner, anything with a different tone – that same +2EV is now wrong. And it’s not just slightly wrong, it’s potentially unrecoverable (even when shooting RAW). You’re no longer correcting for what the camera got wrong; you’re adding +2EV on top of a completely different, freshly recalculated exposure. Everything blows out (over-exposes).
So now you’re not just adjusting exposure once – you’re constantly re-adjusting compensation every time you recompose onto something with a different tone, on top of whatever compensation you’d already dialled in. That’s two moving variables to track in real time (what the meter is doing, and what your compensation needs to be to counter it), not one. In practice that means:
- It costs you time. Every scroll of the dial is time not spent composing or catching the moment in front of you – and in fast-moving situations like a wedding, that moment doesn’t wait. Either you’re ready or you lose the shot and that couple’s memory is lost to time.
- It wears down your gear. Constant dial and wheel use adds up over thousands of shots across a career – it’s a small thing, but it’s not nothing. It could lead to camera failure.
- It’s a mistake generator. Forget to zero out your compensation after moving to a new subject and you won’t notice until you’re several shots deep into blown or crushed images. And it’s an easy thing to forget – you’re not just operating a camera, you’re also being pulled into conversation by a guest, keeping an eye on where the next moment is about to happen, thinking about your next composition. EV / compensation is one more thing competing for attention that’s already stretched thin, and it’s exactly the kind of small setting that gets left behind when something else grabs your focus for even a few seconds.
That said, exposure compensation is genuinely useful for fine-tuning a locked exposure – nudging half a stop up or down once you already know your base exposure is right. What it isn’t is a practical way to fix metering on the fly, shot to shot, scene to scene.
Conclusion (almost)
None of this is about auto mode being better or worse than manual. It’s about understanding what your camera is actually doing when it meters a scene, and taking control of the one moment that matters – the exposure – without turning every recomposition into a math problem.
AE-L isn’t a beginner shortcut and it isn’t a pro secret either. It’s just the missing piece between “trust the camera” and “fight the camera”. Meter off something neutral, lock it, shoot until the light changes, then do it again. That’s the whole system. It’s fast enough to keep up with a wedding day and deliberate enough that you’re not leaving your exposure to chance.
If there’s one thing worth taking from this: the next time a tutorial teaches you Auto ISO, aperture priority, or shutter priority and stops there, know that they’ve only given you half the picture. The other half is knowing how to lock what the camera got right, giving you the power of manual mode within auto.
Where auto can still trip you up
One edge case worth knowing: if you’ve set your minimum shutter speed to 1/250 (as suggested earlier) but the moment actually calls for something faster – say 1/1000 to freeze fast movement – your camera can’t get there on its own in AV mode. That’s a limit you set, and it won’t override it for you.
When that happens, switch to manual mode with Auto ISO on and set your shutter speed yourself. AE-L still works here – remember, manual with Auto ISO is still an auto mode under the hood, since the camera is choosing your overall exposure. Lock, meter, and shoot exactly as before. Switch back to AV once that specific need has passed.
In practice, I stick to AV (aperture priority) for most of a wedding day. My shutter speed is the variable I’m least attached to, so I’m happy to let it fluctuate – especially outdoors where my ISO is already sitting at its floor (100) and has nowhere left to go. Aperture stays fixed for visual consistency across a set of images, which leaves shutter speed as the one part of the exposure triangle I don’t mind the camera moving around on my behalf.
The only time I switch to manual is if I need more control over my shutter speed, or if I need to use flash, but that’s a topic for another blog post.
In closing
None of this – metering, AE-L, compensation – replaces actually knowing your camera. There’s no substitute for understanding how your camera meters, and for building a working knowledge of baseline settings for the lighting scenarios you shoot in most. You can get a close-to-accurate exposure without the camera’s meter if you know the “sunny 16 rule”, but I digress.
AV + AE-L makes reacting to a scene within challenging light faster. It’s still YOU deciding where to point the camera when metering a correct exposure, and that decision is only as good as your understanding of light and tones.
